J. Crew Factory

Fall 2020 Picks for Mom and the kiddos

IMG_7441.jpg

So if you have been following along with me, you know I love J.Crew Factory for most of our wardrobe basics. I can always count on them for a good quality pair of jeans, black pants and a blazer. I also love the animal print and tortoise pieces that they offer at such an affordable price. Used as accents to outfits, they are wardrobe staples to me!

We are planning to go to the mountains this fall so I went ahead and ordered a few things earlier than usual. If you are looking for fall wardrobe staples, here are my favorites. AND, if you only buy two things, get the black Gigi pant(think Spanx quality dress pant; thick with a side zipper) and the sweater blazer(makes any outfit look put together and it’s so comfortable)! I’ve bought both of these two years in a row now. (All items are linked below. Simply click the picture and it will take you to the item on their website.)

I also grabbed a few things for my girl. She loves matching when we can so I knew she would love the pearls and animal print:). The cardigan is a great quality and comes in several colors. I bought the black for layering over outfits but I’m thinking I’ll add the navy to wear over her school uniforms. The denim skirt is from Target last year(I’m still looking for a replacement) and these Leopard Gladiator Sandals(Mini Boden / Sale) were too cute not to share with this. She loves them and will be wearing them with everything through the fall! (Note: It’s warm here year round so I love that these look like fall but won’t be too hot.). Everything is linked through the individual pictures below.

IMG_7437.jpg

And finally my boy. I get most of his wardrobe from J. Crew (Crewcuts) every year because it is the perfect fit for him. I always buy a couple pairs of the Skinny Flex-Fit Chinos and a pair of the jeans every year. All of the pants have the adjustable waist inside which means you can buy larger and wear for longer:). He also has two suits from here and they can not be beat for price vs. quality. (Believe me I have looked everywhere and the The Thompson Suit wins every time!) This year I also added a light-weight corduroy pant and two pullovers to the mix for our trip. The blue is a knit is a lightweight knit material and the hunter green is a sweater and I love the zippers on both. ***Shoes are not from J.Crew but I added them to the pics to show outfit ideas. You probably recognize the Boden sneakers(they’re glow in the dark) from my back-to-school post and the Florsheim penny loafers(Zappo’s) are our favorites. They are the quality of an adult shoe with the most comfortable cushioned insole. My little man never complains about wearing them. All items are linked through the individual pictures below.

So there you have it. My J.Crew Factory haul for Fall 2020. If you have any sizing or quality questions, let me know. I’ll be glad to answer them to the best of my ability for you! For J. Crew Factory sizing reference: I wear a size M and 6/8 in most J. Crew. My daughter, age 8, wears a size 10. My son, age 6 and small for his age, wears a 6/7(which still gives him growing room).

For more outfit ideas, follow me on Instagram. Also, you might enjoy the following blog posts linked below.

Note: If you buy something through one of my links, I may earn a small affiliate commission at NO additional cost to you. I only share and recommend products that I genuinely love and/or use. This enables me to continue running the site and engaging with you:) Thank you for your support!

A Fall Birthday - A Pumpkin & Tractor Party

One fall afternoon in Alabama, a little boy turned two. His favorite boots, a love for tractors and the season inspired the theme. Set on the family farm, guests were greeted with a grand hay bale welcome as they gathered outside in Oscar’s pumpkin patch.

The square hay bales placed in a circular layout served as both seating for the guests and as the fence around the pumpkin patch. Mr. Horsey peeping from a hay bale was available for pretend rides:)

The birthday boy was dressed for the occasion in his embroidered orange and white gingham romper and his favorite orange boots.

2015-10-Oscar2ndBirthday-003.jpg

Since the party was in the afternoon, the guests were offered an assortment of snacks including fruit, hay bales (rice krispies) and a popcorn bar. Inside, centered on the food table was the birthday cake. Taking inspiration from the invitations, the cake featured a pumpkin patch farm scene with an edible pumpkin topper. The top and bottom layers were yellow cake with vanilla buttercream and the middle layer was iced with chocolate buttercream. For party favors, there were individually wrapped tractor and pumpkin cookies on a stick wrapped in cellophane and tied with orange raffia.

2015-10-Oscar2ndBirthday-004.jpeg

The food table was draped in a burlap-like tablecloth while varying height wooden apple barrels were used for display and interest. The table was decorated with miniature hay bales, pumpkins and an assortment of tractor toys to add to the theme. The popcorn bar ingredients were served in kraft paper lined apple and berry baskets complete with the cutest tiny wooden scoops.

2015-10-Oscar2ndBirthday-009.jpeg

The activities for the afternoon included wagon rides, digging for treasures in the corn trough and a craft table complete with tractor coloring sheets and supplies for pumpkin decorating. There was also a corn hole game for the older kids to play.

The finale of the party was this tractor pulled hay ride around the farm. Before leaving, each guest received a custom tractor or pumpkin cookie-on-a-stick and were able to pick a pumpkin of their own to take home home from Oscar’s Pumpkin Patch. It was a pretty sweet ending.

Labor Day Sales 2020

We will have completed our first week of school here this afternoon. We started off strong but we are all dragging today and I for one am thankful for a long weekend already. We plan to relax, soak up some family time on the water and reset for next week. I love a slow Saturday morning in my pajamas drinking coffee and I’ll probably be snagging a few items from these fabulous online Labor Day sales while I scroll. So, if you are like me, you might also enjoy shopping the following shops/items below. There really are some GREAT deals offered.

  1. Boden is on my list! They are offering 20% off most everything all weekend. All my Boden favorites from my August Fave Kiddo Finds will be 20% off. Might be a good time to grab those adorable sneakers.

  2. State Bags - If you haven’t ordered your kids new backpacks yet, you are in luck! State Bags has all of theirs 25% off this weekend only- code LABORDAY25

  3. Hanna Andersson - My kids grew up in these organic cotton pajamas and they are the best. Grab them while they are on sale! Sadly, we are outgrowing them but I do have these cute masks on my list and my fingers are crossed that they will be on sale. (We have already lost two masks and a thermos this week!) Because Hanna is always the best quality, I know these will be so soft and comfortable. They also have their adorable costume accessories 50% off.

  4. Lands’ End - If you are realizing that you didn’t buy enough uniforms, use code PLAY for 20% off. Many other full-price items are up to 40% off with code NICE.

  5. J. Crew Factory - 50-80% off sitewide (no exclusions)!!! Stock up on all your fall basics. So many of my closet staples come from here: like this sweater blazer that I have in two colors; this chambray shirt in a feminine fit; this jean jacket and these 9” high rise jeans(I have them in black, white and denim. Designer quality for $39.50!). Note: If you have a tall, thin boy- this is your go-to source for a perfect fit. O has these flex-fit jeans (best quality and only $19.50) every year and the Thompson suit can’t be beat. I buy these long-sleeve tees ($9.50) to wear under A’s uniform and I’m liking this skirt to try this year. She also has the jean jacket to match mine:)

  6. Vineyard Vines - I buy the Sankaty Performance Polo every year and it’s half off now! It is a great dress shirt for O that I do not have to iron. Also, the material holds up wonderfully wash after wash(i.e. no fading or losing shape). Also, I suggest these Chappy Swim Trunks as they are a staple and anytime you can snag them on sale, stock up for next year;) They are also 50% off with code WHALE.

  7. Anthropologie - Mama deserves a treat too:) You know Anthro is my favorite go-to and they are offering an extra 40% off all sale items this weekend!!! Many of the items from Weekly Outfit Inspirations are on there;) I also added this kimono, fedora hat and necklace to my list! They are all great fall transition pieces.

  8. Jack Rogers - 30% off sitewide with code LDW30 - eek!!! Order those sandals you have been eyeing! I have so many favorites but I’m trying to decide between the Amelia or the Jack Suede Demi-Wedge two for fall.

  9. Bobbi Brown Cosmetics - 25% off sitewide!!! All of my make-up favorites are included but hurry because this one may end tonight.

  10. One Kings Lane - If you are looking for home decor items, OKL is offering 20% sitewide! They are a great quality online resource for furniture, rugs, etc.

Wallpaper Love

I get wallpaper sourcing questions all the time. While many of our favorite designs are only available to the trade, I am currently seeing more and more sources becoming available online and easily accessible to everyone. For example, did you know that Anthropologie sells wallpaper online through their home section? I have always gone to Anthro for some of my favorite fashions but when I discovered that they had fabulous wallpaper too, I was ecstatic-happy dance! You can see all the fabulous new patterns available here. You will be surprised how nicely priced they are too;)

I went through all the designs right away and have way too many in my cart to purchase-help me! I hand-picked my top 15 favorites for you below.

Canopy Creature - Wallpaper @ Anthropologie - Made in the UK.

This is my #1 pick!!! Why? Well, it has a monkey and there is green so it grabbed me from the start. Seriously though, the colors, the animals, the botanicals- they are all perfect and embody everything I want from a wallpaper. I see this in a foyer or a powder bath but it could also work well in a dining room if used sparingly. It is a statement paper so think small doses.

Pina Sola Wallpaper - What’s not to like about these chic golden pineapples and they mean “Welcome” so they are kind of perfect for an entry, guest bath or kitchen.

DIY Art Project

Our paper bag “Chicas” art inspired by Windy O’Connor

IMG_5023.jpg

Let me preface this post by saying I am absolutely obsessed with the Windy O’Connor’s art, especially her “Chica Nation” collection. I love her paintings, her pillows and her wallpapers. If you have not seen her work, please do yourself a favor and check it out @windyoconnor.com and start yourself a wish list. I am a huge fan and hope to own some of her originals one day.

I also am a big supporter of real art and will always buy pieces to add to my collection anytime my budget allows. There is nothing like curating a collection for your home that represents your unique personality. Let me just say you CAN find real art that is affordable. Check out @wellandwondercollective.com for example, “AN ONLINE COLLECTION OF ORIGINAL ART BY EMERGING SOUTHERN ARTISTS, AT PRICES FIT FOR COLLECTORS AT ALL LEVELS”. Also check thrift stores. You will be amazed at the treasures you can find. I will always make the effort to find real art instead of settling for a cheap commercial poster print. Even your children’s art framed creatively can be a great affordable option and so meaningful.

One Saturday morning, my daughter felt creative and wanted me to join her painting. Not having canvases in the house, I just grabbed some paper grocery bags and we used those. I had no idea what we were going to paint. Something wonderful just happened. I guess my subconscious love for the “Chicas” just took over the paint brush.

Had I known the end result would be so joyful, I would have prepared more and used canvases. An artist never knows when their creative juices may hit them though so you just go with what you have! We were feeling the girl power and went to town. First we just made a U-shape for the face, added a neck and shoulders, then went to town with funky makeup and jewelry. I just added layers and shadowing as I went. Looking back, I should have prepared the background by painting all over it first but I was too eager to get going and forgot. My daughter really focused on the makeup and hair;) I must say I love how they turned out.

I love them so much that I decided we must hang them somewhere in the house to enjoy. The only problem was, how? The paper bags were not sturdy enough to hang on their own. I did some research and came up with two options that I liked. One was to try decoupaging them to a canvas which I ruled out because I was afraid the paper was too thick to adhere to the canvas. The other option was to frame them between glass in the floating frame style. Enter problem number two. The paintings were not a standard frame size(duh- grocery bags remember). I considered having a custom size floating frame made from @framebridge.com (I love their frames) but the cost was too high for this project. After scouring the internet, I finally decided up0n these 16” x 20” floating frames from Michaels. They were the closest size that would work and were a great price point for a DIY art project. Because I couldn’t get that gold bamboo frame off my mind, I decided to add a touch of gold to the textured gray part of these frames. Here is the paint I used. Any stiff straight edge brush will do.

IMG_6270.jpg

I had to trim the paintings down a bit to fit the frames. Ideally you want at least a 2” or greater consistent space around the art. A good trick for getting a clean torn edge is to tear against a ruler. This keeps the tear straight but gives you a nice raw edge, which I prefer over just cutting with scissors.

Once I had the art trimmed to size, I set it aside and disassembled the frames. I then embellished the frames with a gold brushed look. There is no real technique to this. I just dot a few small globs of paint randomly around the border then spread them with the brush. At the end, take a paper towel and wipe the excess until you get a look that you like.

After the frames dry about 10 minutes or so, it’s time to reassemble them. I used a couple pieces of tape on the back of the art to hold it in place while sandwiching it between the two pieces of glass. I’m probably not explaining this well, but you can see from the photos there are brackets that hold everything together at the end. It’s not hard. You don’t even have to add the gold paint if you find a frame you like as-is.

Now it’s time to hang them!

Here they are hanging above my desk in my new office space. I love how these frames elevate the art to a gallery feel. And, my daughter is proud to see our artwork so grandly displayed together:) That’s a WIN-WIN all around.

IMG_6393.jpg

Maybe you have some art lying around that you’ve never gotten around to framing. Try this! For about $40 and an hour of your time, you too could have a similar look. I have less than $40 tied up in these(The acrylic paint and paper bags were free b/c I already had them on hand. My only cost besides my time was the frames(which were on sale) and the gold paint.) Here’s your weekend project. You can do it!

Fave Kiddo Finds - August 2020

Back-to-School Inspired (Ages 4-8)

Back-to-School Inspired (Ages 4-8)

It’s August. Whether you are returning to the classroom, home-schooling or doing virtual this year; back-to-school time is drawing near. I usually LOVE back-to-school shopping but this year I am having a hard time getting started. I can’t imagine why?

Whether we like it or not, school is starting in the midst of a p———-(dare I say the word). We are all making tough choices about what is best for our kids and our families. Tough choices we’ve never had to make before and it’s weighing on us. I realized recently that the heaviness can carry over to my kiddos if I let it. That’s when I decided to start preparing in an effort to get the kids excited about learning and going back to school. I don’t want to take this tradition from them.

I, for one, have always LOVED back-to-school shopping! I still get giddy over a new pack of markers. There’s something about shopping for those supplies and selecting a new backpack that give me all the nostalgic feels. I want my kids to have that too. So, today I rounded up a collection of all the things inspiring me to get in the b-t-s mood. Yes, I’m a sucker for the classic school colors. An Out of this World Birthday

IMG_4902.JPG

With both of my kiddos having upcoming birthdays, I have been brainstorming party ideas lately. They were so excited watching the recent launch of Crew Dragon through Space X that I revisited the whole space party theme. Oscar had a space themed birthday party when he turned 4. I went all out on the cake but the rest of the party was not that hard. To be honest, I had a hard time finding decorations at the time. We let the kids wear their astronaut costumes(a purchase from the Kennedy Space Center visit) and I just added space themed balloons. We did make homemade Galactic Play Dough for the party favors; it was a big hit!

DSC_7658.JPG

Besides cake, we ate “rocket dogs”, chips, Moon Pies and earth cookies(see in photo below). Don’t worry; I did have the standard veggie/fruit tray as well:) I got in a little annual photo session with the birthday boy in his birthday crown before the party. Then, we pretty much let the kids run around wild outside and ended with a pinata and a little rocket launch of our own(via the Stomp Rocket). It was pretty out of this world!

Looking online lately, I found that there are currently so many more options available for a space themed birthday today. Jealous! If you just want a bundle, check out the Space Kit in a Box by Meri Meri(see first photo below). If you prefer to hand select items and mix and match your own look, I’ve linked some more ideas below(just click the photo). With all that is available, there should be no “scrub” needed for your next space party:) Happy planning!

My Make-Up Bag

The Products I Keep Going Back To

IMG_4747.jpg

My Go-To Make-up Products

Truth: I do not wear make-up every day. One reason is that I honestly hate to get ready but the other reason is that I think it’s good to give our skin time to breathe. Growing up, most make-up looked so fake on me(where were those contour and blender sponges when we needed them?!?!) and always irritated my skin so I got into a habit of not wearing it. I’ll admit though that as I’ve gotten older, I see the need to enhance my face a little. You know, try to bring back that natural dewy glow that I used to take for granted. So I began searching for clean products that made me feel better about my skin. And because I hate getting ready, I have searched for the few products that consistently give me a natural and refreshed look in the least amount of time possible. Beauty Counter, Bobbi Brown and Rodan and Fields are my go-to brands and here are my most used products that give me a refreshed look in five minutes flat:

  1. Rodan & Fields Radiant Defense Perfecting Liquid - My favorite and most used product! I have never liked foundation until I found this. It’s like a BB cream and foundation in one. I use it because it feels like nothing on and because it blurs flaws. Also, it contains SPF so that’s one less thing to worry about. (I use color Sand-3)

lp-radiant-defense-2x2-2-d.jpg

2. Beauty Counter Touchup Concealer Pen - I like the brush applicator and because it’s lightweight and no fuss. (I use colors: fair and light)

product-images_2405_imgs_base_fair_pdp-touchupskinconcealerpen-fair_selling-shot_528x962_1.jpg

3. Beauty Counter Color Pinch Cream Blusher - I love how it adds color without drying skin. I use the hibiscus for blush AND lipstick. It is one of the most versatile products I’ve used. I use the caramel color occasionally if I am attempting to contour:)

product-images_5355_variants_2123_imgs_COLOR_PINCH_CREAM_BLUSHER_HIBISCUS_PDP.jpg

4. Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick - I’ve tried other eyeshadows and always come back to the cream ones because they do NOT irritate my eyes. I currently am using the Nude Beach color all over and it is a great summer base that seems to go with everything. I am also thinking of trying Vanilla(their bestseller), Malted Pink and Dusty Mauve(I’ll keep you posted:)

000559440-R159181006-1.jpg

5. Beauty Counter Brilliant Brow Gel - It still amazes me what an enhanced brow can do for your face! I love how this naturally defines my brows. It has color and the gel grooms and sets the brow in a natural way. (I use the Medium Brown color)

product-images_5377_variants_100000147_imgs_BRILLIANT_BROW_GEL_MEDIUM_PDP (1).jpg

6. Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick - I have using these for years now. I have never found a bad color and they last forever(like 1-2 years)! It is like a bronzer and a subtle highlighter in one and I use it on the cheekbones and wherever else I need a little pizzazz. I have even used it for eye shadow! The colors always blend perfectly for a dewy bronzy glow. I’m currently loving the Bronze color.

bb_sku_E1F601_1080x1080_0.jpg

7. Bobbi Brown Highlighting Powder - Pink Glow - I don’t use this one every time like I do the shimmer brick but when I really want to highlight the cheekbones for a special occasion, this is what I use. My makeup feels special when I wear it.

images.jpg

8. Beauty Counter Volumizing Mascara-Black - Everybody knows the value of mascara and how it makes the eyes pop but this is the ONLY one I have found that works AND does not itch my eyes. It’s the only one I wear.

product-images_2552_imgs_VOLUMIZING_MASCARA_PDP.jpg

9. Bobbi Brown Crushed Lip Color - Sazan Nude - I have lots of BB and BC lipsticks because that is the one thing I like to change up often but I recently bought this one and I love it! It gives a barely there look that is not neither matte nor shiny. It has been my everyday color for the summer.

31OQhcTIJDL.jpg

Well, there you have it. What product are you loving in your makeup bag these days?

Thailand - Week 4

Krabi Province

After the hustle and bustle of the city, we were ready to relax. From Bangkok, we took a short inexpensive flight to the province of Krabi, Thailand where I spent my last week in Thailand.

Positioned on Phra Nang Peninsula on the Adaman Sea, Krabi is home to some of the most beautiful water and beaches in the world. We chose to stay at Railay Village Resort on Railay Beach as it is home to four popular beaches that can be explored by foot. It is also a good place to do a little island hopping by boat from there.

Side note: Railay is only accessible by boat(a real adventure). A long-tail boat taxi from Ao Nang will carry you there. Along the way, you will witness surreal limestone boulders jutting from the sea as you sail through the most beautiful emerald water. Upon arriving, you are greeted with a postcard worthy beach presentation as you wade through the shallow lagoon water to land.

Railay Beach

DSC_0390.jpg

The picturesque Railay consists of four beach areas: Tonsai Beach(known for rock climbing), Railay West Beach(where you will want to stay), Railay East (known for night life) and the famous Ao Phra Nang Beach. It is also home to the exclusive Rayavadee resort which is perfection if you want to splurge(known to host celebrities). Unlike Phuket, Railay has a laid-back beachy-boho feel and is the perfect spot for relaxing. The villa, pools and spa at Railay Village Resort are very nice and a very affordable price.

Railay Village Resort

If you tire of spa treatments and lounging by the pool or beach, try exploring the peninsula. There are lush tropical jungle trails and interesting caves to explore and many monkeys to watch along the way. Many enjoy rock climbing the craggy limestone cliffs of Tonsai or kayaking around the lagoon. While discovering the caves and hidden spots, definitely spend a day at Phra Nang Beach. Check out Princess Cave and swim under stalactites. If you get hungry, there are food boats dock along the beach area or dine at The Grotto for a special treat.

From Railay, it easy to schedule a day of island hopping by speedboat. There are many secret islands in the area that are only accessible by boat so I highly recommend taking an excursion. My tour included the famous Phi Phi Islands along with Poda, Tup, Chicken and Hong Island. One of the Phi Phi Islands, Ko Phi Pi Le was the location for the Leonardo Di Caprio film, The Beach. You might recognize the location below(a lagoon between the two giant boulders). The emerald- turquoise color of the water is unlike any other I have seen.

“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” - Jacques Yves Cousteau.

These words were never more true.

As the sunset on my last week in Thailand, I recounted the adventure of a lifetime that I had just taken. It is one that I will never forget. From the mountains to the sea, Thailand offers so many treasure to discover. It was definitely a bucket list destination for me but I would love to return again some day. Until then, sawadee-ka and khaawp kuhn-ka(thank you) Thailand. You left a mark on me that I still carry today.

I hope you have enjoyed taking this journey with me. Thailand is definitely a place where wanderlust dreams come true. What are your bucket list destinations? Where do you plan to go as soon as it is safe to travel? Let’s plan together!

Thailand - Week 3

Being a textile and architecture lover, a tour of the Jim Thompson House was at the top of my list. His iconic red home embodies everything my mind had originally envisioned about Thailand.

Bangkok

From Chiang Mai we took an overnight train to Bangkok where we stayed for 3 days. After visiting rural villages, Bangkok is quite the juxtaposition. As the capital of Thailand, it is a very cosmopolitan city. Bustling with restaurants, hotels, nightlife, and entertainment, Bangkok presents most everything the western and eastern world have to offer.

Having only three days there, we hit the highlights of interest to me but here is a longer list of suggested activities: A Temple Tour, the Floating Market, Chatuchak Weekend Market, a boat tour along the Chao Phraya River, a stroll through Lumpini Park(Bangkok’s version of Central Park), watch a Muai Thai competition, shopping, spa and of course sample tons of delicious food.

Jim Thompson House

Being a textile and architecture lover, a tour of the Jim Thompson House was at the top of my list. His iconic red home embodies everything my mind had originally envisioned about Thailand.

Jim Thompson, also known as the “Thai Silk King” is responsible for starting the Thai silk industry after World War II. His home is a beautiful representation of a traditional Thai stilt house and offers a peak into his interesting past. Born the son of a textile manufacturer in Delaware, he worked in architecture in New York as a young man before he enlisted and served in World War II. The war led him to Thailand where he discovered and made known the beautiful work of the Thai silk weavers that still continues today. His legendary disappearance in 1967 is still a mystery.

A tour of his home starts in the luscious tropical grounds, continues with the history of the silk process from worm to weaving and displays a lovely collection of Asian art and pottery. It was one of my favorite stops. You can read more of his story and purchase his luxurious silks through jimthompson.com.

Chao Phraya River, Reclining Buddha & Wat Arun, The Grand Palace & Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles

Definitely tour the Chao Phraya River on one of the many varieties of boats available. It’s interesting to see the juxtaposition of modern skyscrapers next to thousand year old wats and wooden long-tail boats.

While the Buddhist temples possess such an intriguing variety of architecture, my time was short in Bangkok and I did not want to spend all of it only touring wats. I narrowed down to visiting the most famous: Wat Pho; the Reclining Buddha(note the size and the mother-of-pearl inlay on the feet), Wat Arun and Wat Saket. From the roof, to the ceilings, to the columns to the chedis; the attention to detail is amazing. We also enjoyed touring the grounds of The Grand Palace which is meticulously maintained. It was my second favorite stop in Bangkok. Nearby is Queen Sirikit’s Textile Museum where of course I had to stop and explore(buy) some silk(see a pattern here?) You can see me trying on some of the costumes below.

Tuk Tuk Tour - high Tea at The Sukhothai Bangkok - Dinner & a Show at the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok

Bangkok has many modes of transportation and we sampled most of them. From tuk-tuk to boat to the BTS Skytrain, we made our way around the city. Since it was just before Christmas when I visited, we sought out a few ways to celebrate traditionally in Bangkok. We treated ourselves to high tea at The Sukhothai Bangkok hotel. The presentation of tea, desserts and chocolate is a real feast for the senses. Our last night was spent enjoying dinner and a show(Sala Rim Naam) of traditional Thai dancing at the Mandarin Oriental-Bangkok(highly recommend) where we arrived by boat and were greeted by one of the few Christmas trees(interestingly flown in from Canada) we had seen in Bangkok. It was both magical and comforting to experience some of our western traditions and luxuries after being away from America for over two weeks.

My three days in Bangkok were a whirlwind but I am glad we made the stop. From here, we headed to the beautiful beaches of Krabi for the final leg of the trip. I can’t wait to share these beautiful photos with you next weekend!

A Father’s Day Gift Guide

Our guy has a birthday one week before Father’s Day so we usually shower him big this time of year. By shower him big, I mean I condone him ordering his own gift(toy) and I buy him something the kids and I would like for him to have:)

Some of Our guy’s favorites

Our guy has a birthday one week before Father’s Day so we usually shower him big this time of year. By shower him big, I mean I condone him ordering his own gift(toy) and I buy him something the kids and I would like for him to have:) He loves electronics and tennis but I know better than to shop those technical items for him. The man is far too picky with his gadgets! I usually stick with updating his fashion and selecting a sentimental gift. Here’s what I have gathered for this year’s selection.

  1. Yeti Cooler - Of all the Yeti coolers our guy has owned, this style(Hopper Flip 12 Soft Cooler) gets used the most and I’m loving this new navy color.

  2. Floafers - Country Club Driver in Driftwood Brown/Coconut - If you have bought Natives, you will love these shoes! My son has had this pair for a little while now and loves them. I love that they are a little dressier than Natives and they don’t stink. Now my hubby has hinted that he would like a pair:) Fun for a Father/Son match. *25% off for Father’s Day with code FATHERS25

  3. Apple Air Pods Pro - The hubs has been a long time fan of noise canceling headphones and Apple products, so these are a no-brainer. They are great for working from home and working on the go.

  4. Smathers & Branson Needlepoint belts - The one featured is in-stock and ready to ship but definitely check out their “Life Belt Builder” for a one-of-a-kind keepsake gift. *They are offering free monogramming sitewide and $50 off with code LIFEBELT50 on their site right now.

  5. Smathers & Branson Needlepoint Can Cooler - “World’s Best Dad” in needlepoint and leather; how sweet is that? A more affordable option and just as special.

  6. Hari Mari Camino Flip-Flops - I’ve wanted to buy these for my man for quite some time now. From the quality leather to the stitched detail; I love everything about them! My only dilemma is which colorway. I like all three versions!

  7. Peter Millar Crafty Performance Polo - High quality performance polo - I don’t know about you but my guys are loving all their clothes in performance material lately. It’s so cool and comfortable in this Florida weather. A win for me is that I don’t have to iron them!

  8. Yeti Rambler 20 oz. Tumbler - Love the new graphite color to update our stainless one- We have enjoyed a few different styles of Yeti cups and this one is still my husband’s go-to. He uses the stainless steel version daily. He says it’s the perfect size.

  9. Peter Millar Bullock Performance Polo- These are so great that I had to put them on the list twice. Love the colors in this one! They are also having a great 30 % off sale on select items right now;)

  10. Vineyard Vines Island Chappy Swim Trunks - All of their swim trunks are great but there is something about these washed fabric ones that caught my eye. They have that classic, lived-in quality.

  11. Vineyard Vines Performance Breaker Shorts - Another performance fave. My husband likes the shorter length but there are 3 lengths available. *40% off right now with code SUMMER40

  12. Apple Sport Loop Band - I can’t decide which color is my favorite but these are great if your man is not a fan of the regular band. They are stretchy and washable.

Thailand - Week 2

Chiang Mai, continued…

Thanks for following along on this new wanderlust weekend series: Travel Tales from Thailand. This weekend’s story concludes my second week in Thailand and my last week in Chiang Mai.

There really is so much to do in the Chiang Mai area that I was glad to have had two whole weeks there. This week was spent continuing some very rewarding volunteer work, taking a Thai cooking class, touring street markets and coming as close as I ever will to a real tiger.

Tiger Kingdom- Mai Rim

Now I am no tiger king(queen) but I can say that I have had a very real and up-close encounter with these big cats. At Tiger Kingdom in Mae Rim, one can hold a cub and pet the largest tiger your courage will allow. I’ll admit I was skeptical at first about their captivation but after seeing the care and health of these tigers and learning about how T.K. was focusing on conservation through education, I was put at ease. I also learned that they collaborate with universities for veterinary research.

After checking the place out, I decided to take my one chance to encounter these beautiful animals. Nervous and excited, I approached the tigers from behind as instructed. The size of his paws and the depth of his purr alerted me to the sheer magnitude of his strength. From the unique striped pattern of their fur to their magnetic amber eyes, everything about tigers is beautiful to me.

To answer any questions that you might have about visiting Tiger Kingdom, I’ve included a link to their website and here are several reviews found on Trip Advisor.

Thai Cooking School

If you love Thai food like I do, you will definitely want to take a class at one of the many wonderful cooking schools available. Here is a list of highly recommended classes.

Our experience began with a tour through the street markets and a Thai herb garden. I was amazed at the beauty and variety of fruit and vegetables available. I tried many fruits that I had never seen or even heard of before. Have you ever tried rambutan, mangosteen or durian? I learned that there are five flavors that join to make the holy grail of Thai food: spicy, sour, bitter, sweet, and salty. Curry paste, rice vinegar, lime, coconut milk, fish sauce and fresh herbs(cilantro, mint, Thai basil, Vietnamese coriander and lemongrass to name a few)are key in making authentic Thai dishes. If you’ve never smelled fresh Thai basil, you are in for a treat! After an tour and education on the basic of thai cuisine, we were able to select two dishes we wanted to personally prepare. I chose the popular Pad Thai and Thai Red Curry. (After tasting all the curries, I like Massaman Curry the best) Now my dishes were not chef-worthy presentations but the taste was amazing. The fresh noodles and herbs straight from the garden definitely made the dish. The night ended by sharing our dishes around a family style table. The instructor and the group setting with fellow travelers made for a very fun experience that I highly recommend.

Street Markets

Any night that we had free time, we could always find an exotic street market to tour. We would sample the street food(I did refrain from trying the fried insects), enjoy the entertainment and always shop the latest hand-crafted treasures I could find. In fact, I bought so many that I needed a second suitcase to get them all home! Tha Pae(artsy), the Night Bazaar(huge with everything) and Warorot Market(great textiles) were some of the favorite street markets I visited. After a night of walking the markets, I suggest ending with a foot or back massage(which you can get almost anywhere you go for about $10)

Connie’s Home

The real highlight of my time in Chiang Mai was volunteering at a special place called Connie’s Home. This christian ministry was originally started and completely funded by a dear couple from the US. Not only do they provide a loving home and education for at-risk children from overcrowded orphanages, but they also minister to female juvenile offenders by providing a work-release nanny program. Playing with the children there and connecting with the teens through sewing projects will always hold a special place in my heart. If you would like more information on Connie’s Home or would like to volunteer or offer support, I encourage you to read more of their story here.

ACCOMMODATIONS in Chiang Mai

I was lucky to have stayed with a family member during my two weeks in Chiang Mai but if I were to go back today, the following hotels would be on my list of picks. For a highly recommended budget-friendly hotel in the heart of Old Town Chiang Mai, try Phra Singh Village. The Dhara Dhevi Chiang Mai is set on 60 acres lush tranquil grounds in the historical heartland of Northern Thailand and I would be my pick for an intermediate priced stay. Situated along the Mae Ping River, Anantara Chiang Mai Resort would be another idea. For a real splurge, check out 137 Pillars House Chiang Mai. It won the 2019 Trip Advisor Traveler’s Choice Award and I can see why. I must mention though that a splurge on accommodations is not necessary in Thailand. Many of their nicest hotels range from $50-$125/night. For your drooling pleasure, I did include a few photos below(credits to Trip Advisor) of the accommodations I mentioned below.

I hope you have enjoyed these highlights from Chiang Mai. If you have any recommendations or tips from your travels in Thailand, please share in a comment below. Stay tuned for next weekends Travel Tales from Thailand (Hint- We head south.)

A Blueberry Farm Adventure

IMG_3321.JPG

With a desperate need to escape from quarantine, our little family took a trip to a nearby blueberry farm a couple weeks ago. With large open spaces, plenty of sunshine and fresh air, it was the perfect little outing. This was our first experience blueberry picking and our first time out of the house in at least eight weeks(not counting walks and biking)so we all were super excited. Sister even wore a fancy dress for the occasion;)

The farm(Albritton Fruit Farm) was well-equipped and provided everything needed for a perfect experience. Armed with a bucket in each hand, off we went on our search. Who knew there were so many varieties of blueberries? We sampled the sun-warmed berries straight from the bush as we strolled along each row. We learned that the Emerald variety is a firm, semi-sweet berry that can grow quite large. The Spring-High variety is a small-medium sized berry that is very sweet. The farmer’s favorite and ours too was the Jewel variety; large, soft skinned, with a sweet and tart flavor.

Seeing all the green row after row was very grounding and I felt a much-needed sense of re-connection.

After hand selecting our four pounds(I can’t believe we picked that many) of blueberry treasures, I couldn’t wait to head home and decide what to make with them. Since they were the best blueberries I had ever eaten, I set aside a large bowl just for snacking and smoothies before I began my search for the perfect recipe. Usually I would make a crisp(like this one) with fresh fruit but I wanted to try something new this time. I decided on an Easy Blueberry Cheesecake dessert(instead of canned filling, we made home-made) and these delicious Banana-Blueberry Muffins. The kids got into helping and my son, the little chef, convinced me that we also needed to make blueberry syrup to pour over pancakes(we actually used this blueberry filling recipe since it could double for the cheesecake filling and syrup). ***Not my own recipes but all of them can be found on my Pinterest boards***

After all our hard work, we tasted the fruits of our labor(I hate I didn’t get pictures). My daughter liked the graham cracker crust from the blueberry dessert the best and they both devoured the muffins over the next two days! We also enjoyed the blueberry syrup over our pancakes that weekend but by that point it had congealed a little more than our liking. Next time I will make an actual syrup instead of the filling. I’m not telling how many pieces of that dessert I enjoyed but I’ll just say none of it went to waste;)

It was a perfect adventure. What about your family? Have you found any new places to safely escape lately? Please share:)

Thailand - Week 1

Sawasdee ka(hello in Thai) is one of the few phrases I remember from my visit to Thailand but the country itself still mesmerizes me today.

Sawasdee ka(hello in Thai) is one of the few phrases I remember from my visit to Thailand but the country itself still mesmerizes me today.

Still lingering in my memory several years later, Thailand is by far the most exotic and magical place I have ever visited. Where else can you pet tigers, ride elephants, eat exotic food, afford daily massages and island hop through the most beautiful water you have ever seen?

The lantern festival of lights is what first lured me to Thailand. Having a family member living there at the time made the trip a reality. I stayed just short of a month and visited three main areas: Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Krabi. It was truly a bucket list trip for me. There is so much to experience there that I could never cover it all but I will share my highlights from my trip starting with week one.

Week 1 - Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai which means “New City” in Thai is a mountainous region and the largest city in Northern Thailand. Founded in 1296, it was capital of the independent Lanna Kingdom until 1558(according to Google). Its Old City area still retains remnants of walls and moats from its history as a cultural and religious center. With its revered temples alongside its modern buildings, today Chiang Mai is a place where the past and present merge to create a beautiful melange for the senses.

I arrived in Chiang Mai at the end of November just in time for the Thai Festival of Lights(or what looks like a scene from the movie Tangled). The country-wide annual celebration of Loy Krathong (loy meaning float + krathong referring to a banana trunk decorated with flowers and incense sticks) collides with the northern tradition of Yi Peng (referring to the full moon day in the second month according to the Lanna lunar calendar) in Chiang Mai. As the largest city in northern Thailand, Chiang Mai boasts some of the most incredible parades, firework displays and traditional art performances in celebration of this holiday.

The Thais see it as a time to wave goodbye to misfortune, wash away sins of the past year, and make wishes for the coming year. For me, it was truly a magical experience and it has become a tradition that our family pays homage to almost every year around Thanksgiving.

Second stop - Patara Elephant farm

I highly recommend visiting Patara Elephant Farm. I signed up to be an “elephant care-giver” for a day and it was an experience like no other. The day includes a thorough education on these gentle giants as you are guided through feeding and grooming them. The bath ends with a surprise splash and is followed by a picnic lunch under a thatched hut that clings to the mountainside. After lunch, you finish the day touring the mountain trails on your newly trusted companion. I’ll never forget how she carefully carried me on her back by enveloping my legs with her magnificent ears. Is was as if she was caring for me instead. At the end of the journey, I said goodbye to my new friend and as her trunk wrapped my waist, I knew that neither of us would ever forget our meeting.

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is a Theravada Buddhist temple (wat) in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. It is one of northern Thailand’s most sacred temples and is a beautiful example of northern Thai architecture. To view the beauty of this wat, one must first climb the iconic Naga serpentine steps(306 of them) to the top. Once there, the view of the city is breathtaking.

Fourth Stop - Hmong Village on Doi Pui

While visiting Doi Suthep, we also visitied Doi Pui where the Hmong hill-tribe lives. The road up to the village is steep but worth the visit. I was told that most of the hill-tribes of the north used to cultivate opium poppies. Today, the Hmong community is sustained by selling agricultural products and traditional crafts(too intriguing not to purchase).

This concludes Week 1 of my travels in Chiang Mai. Stay tuned for Week 2 of my Thailand adventure by subscribing via email below.

Formal Living Rooms - Yea or nay?

Call me old fashioned, southern or whatever but I still love a formal living room.

We are between homes at the time but both our first home and this home have a family room AND a formal living room. Call me old fashioned, southern or whatever but I still like having a formal living room. For one, this is my quiet space where I can retreat for a comforting cup of tea or coffee while I pause and ponder(when I can find the time). Second, I love the fact that this room remains tidy and untouched by daily life clutter(tidy from lack of use my husband would argue). Third, it is a nice transition room to welcome guests. It gives a glimpse of your personality(the ideal polished side appropriate for first impressions). And finally, I love that it has not been overtaken by toys, remotes and electronics.

On behalf of my argument, I present our current living room(for resources, see end of post). Here is a glimpse as you first enter the house from the foyer. The console table along the back of the sofa always features this carefully selected pair of lamps and a centerpiece that changes with the seasons. Framing the sliding glass doors are my most coveted draperies that I had custom made at my shop years ago. They are my favorite color teal and are crewel embroidered with various shades of chartreuse. They have been repurposed from the dining room to the living room and I still never tire of them.

IMG_8005.jpg

The next photos show the pair of antique chairs that I found for a steal at an antique shop years ago. I had them reupholstered in teal velvet and added some eclectic pillows for a touch of whimsy. Between the two chairs is a round table covered in round table cloths. On it I like to feature a few of my favorite things. I change the objects out from time to time but I like how the collection reveals little things unique to our family. For example, the silhouettes of my children from their toddler days, a painting I found while on vacation in Seaside, a gifted Limoges lion(I’m a Leo), a handmade cross from a trip to Honduras, some funky pottery art from the local farmer’s market here and a special photo of my family are all sentimental to me. (All of which would likely be broken if displayed in a high traffic area like a family room.)

Here is the front view of my sofa that I love. With its curvy profile, comfortable length and single seat cushion, it is both comfortable and elegant. I also love how it offers a blank canvas that goes with anything. Everyone thought I was crazy buying a white sofa with children but it is slip-covered and honestly I have only had to wash it a couple times. I change the accent pillows out periodically but here I am showing two square Suzani patterned pillows with a custom size lumbar pillow in the center. The tapestry over the lumbar is a textile find from Thailand that just speaks to me. Grounding the furniture is a floral kilim style rug.

DSC_8630.jpg

The coffee table(which would not be ideal in a casual family room) shows a rotating collection of my latest musings. My daughter and I are obsessed with seashells right now so we like displaying some of our treasures on this wooden tray. On my coffee table, you can always find a book stack and a candle or small plant. The decoupage bowl usually holds some sort of decorative balls and the cross is representative of my faith.

IMG_2509.jpg

With my argument presented, what is your stance on the formal living room vs. family great room? My husband is trying to convince me that we only need one big family room in the next house. I am on the fence about it. While I love the idea of not wasting space and the idea of an open living concept, I fret over not having a retreat I can call my own. How do you live in your home? Are you able to live peacefully together in one grand living room? How do you prevent the toys and screens from taking over? Help me with this dilemma. Leave your suggestions below.

Our Experience with Remote Learning during Covid-19…

Ya’ll. Just two more weeks. Mamas hang in there. Just two more weeks of remote learning before summer. We can do this. Help me to the finish line. I don’t know about you but we have run out of steam…

At-home%2Blearning%2Bresources

Ya’ll.  Just two more weeks.  Mamas hang in there.  Just two more weeks of remote learning before summer.  We can do this.  Help me to the finish line.  I don’t know about you but we have run out of steam (and tequila-ha ha).

Don’t get me wrong; in the beginning I was kind of excited to have the opportunity to educate my children at home(I mean I am crafty and have a love of learning, so this should be fun, right?).  The idea of having more time as a family and to witness those light-bulb learning moments firsthand seemed all butterflies and rainbows.  We actually started a week early because I was so excited.  At first I planned themed assignments around their interests.  For example, the first week we explored a beach/ocean theme where we read books, took virtual field trips, made play dough shell fossil imprints, studied the ocean eco-system and did under the sea yoga sequences. We even had ocean themed stickers for the rewards chart.  We were owning this e-school thing.

Then week 2 came along and we received our actual e-learning assignments from their teachers.  It seemed like a lot but we eagerly took the challenge.  I mean if we had to be quarantined, at least this gave them a project and purpose daily.  My son and daughter got in on the planning, borrowing ideas from their own teachers, they requested we make a compliment jar and prize box.  I obliged (whatever it takes to get them motivated).

When week 3 assignments came in, we all had the sobering realization that this was a little more serious than we bargained for.  As we worked with the teachers to fine-tune this new learning arrangement, we also began to lose some of our excitement.  By Week 4, the kids and I were no longer loving it.  Thankfully, Easter weekend came and saved us from some of the e-learning monotony-hallelujah.

Today, we are officially on week 7 and we are so over all of it.  We have virtual field tripped(to so many cool places), journal-ed, flat teacher adventured. We have hugged Georgia(more than she desires) and had a guest tiger and cheetah visit our living room. We have read books, puzzled, painted, and taken Lego challenges. We have walked, biked, swam, shot hoops and jumped on the trampoline a zillion times. We have enjoyed Go-Noodle and Cosmic Yoga. We planted seeds, had cooking classes and experienced cleaning chores. AND, we have I-Ready-ed, IXL-ed, Go Math-ed, Brain Pop-ed, and Zoom chatted until we can no more.   We are all just DONE.

I never knew this e-learning would become a full-time job.  Now I know this is uncharted waters and that we are all just trying to make the best of a situation that none of us chose.  And while I appreciate this pause to soak up extra family time, I also have to say that it has been a difficult balance.  I find it hard to be the best I can be at wife, mom, career, teacher and self.  I don’t juggle as well as I would like.  In an effort to step away and reflect, I have concluded:

1.         I am thankful to have had the time and resources to put my work on the back-burner and devote myself to this time of e-learning with the kids.  Witnessing first hand just how their little minds are working and thriving is so rewarding.  (On the flip, I need to return to my work that actually provides an income for our family.)

2.         I am  torn over my stance on screen time.  I understand it is the way of the world(and the way of education at the moment) but at the same time studies on the damage of too much screen-time is very disturbing.  Also, if I’m honest, I need to save screen time(I-Pad apps and Nintendo games) for the times when mama needs a break.

3.         I realize even more just how much I appreciate their wonderful teachers who chose to be educators and do it so well.  (Though it will never equal your worth, you will be getting a special gift from me this year.)

4.         My kids and I need a break from each other.  Not for long.  Just a break and refresh. (a two week stay with their grandparents would be nice-hint hint)

For now, I will keep on juggling the balls of motherhood like the rest of you while I hope and wait for schools to open back up again.  The kids and I look forward to wrapping up these last two weeks of e-learning and not looking at a school-prescribed screen for at least two months!  We are ready to bust out of here!  We need adventure, the sea, the sun, road trips, hotels, restaurant meals and conversations “in-person” with friends and family.

I am both excited and fearful to get back out there after quarantining for 7 weeks but we are ready to at least try.  How are you doing?  If these last weeks of remote learning have your sanity hanging on by a thread, see the list of ideas below. (Maybe you can find one or two that you have not tried yet.) Or maybe you have a new revelation after experiencing remote learning?  Please share; I would love to know.  For now, hang in there ladies!  You have got this.

Some resources that we have enjoyed during quarantine remote learning(most of these are free and target elementary age kids but many are enjoyable to all ages):

  1. Go-Noodle (great to diminish excess energy when you can’t go outside)

  2. Cosmic Yoga (I even enjoyed doing these)

  3. Storyline Online (celebrities read favorite children’s books) and Story Time from Space (astronauts reading books:)

  4. Virtual Field Trips (Here is a link to an awesome list by We Are Teachers. We have also had great luck on You Tube.)

  5. Cooking classes (delish.com is offering free digital cooking classes for kids every week day)

  6. Take a lunch break and Doodle with Mo Willems (we also love these step by step drawing books by Usborne)

  7. Lego fun (make a Lego self-portrait, do a Lego challenge or practice symmetry with Legos)

  8. Arts and Crafts projects (there are far too many to list; see my Pinterest board for ideas)

  9. Car wash at home (Melissa & Doug has a cute kit)

  10. Cleaning chores (i.e. dust, load dishwasher, sweep, vacuum, make bed, put clothes away)

  11. Go on a Scavenger hunt- my two love these! (here is an indoor one; here’s a nature one and here is a cute neighborhood version)

  12. Write letters to loved ones (here’s a cute keepsake flamingo card we did)

  13. Jigsaw puzzles and board games (Crocodile Creek and Peaceable Kingdom make some of our favorites)

  14. Plant a small garden (veggies, flowers or even a butterfly garden)

  15. Camp in your yard (or just make s’mores and go back inside)

  16. Have a scooter ride through the neighborhood. (we have gotten our money’s worth out of this one)

  17. Plan an at-home end-of-school celebration (we are always looking for an excuse to have cake)

Happy Mail from Anthro

Since it is Mother’s Day week AND Anthropologie has been running some great sales AND I still had gift cards from Christmas; I decided it only made sense to do a little shopping and treat myself. Right?

IMG_2650.jpg

Now I know all of you are thinking that I bought that adorable fish skirt on my Mother’s Day Wish List, but I did not.  At least not yet. (Psst-I am still waiting for it to go on sale and you will be the first to know when it does).  What I did purchase were a few colorful pieces that I can wear with basic bottoms that I already own, i.e. denim cut-offs (my go-to lately). Are you ready to see?

Ta daaaa! My first item is this fabulous Fete Kimono made by India Collection (I’m sorry to say but it is currently sold out:( - here’s a link to other fun substitutes). I chose this for a statement piece because it’s cheeky in a good way. With its bold color and fun leopard print (literal leopards; how fun is that?) it grabbed my attention right away!

IMG_2651.jpg

I plan to wear it with a basic white top and my fav denim cut-offs (they are broken-in, hide love handles and are not too short). For shoes(my favorite thing to buy), I like these two options:

1.  For an everyday casual look - I suggest these Sam Edelman slides that have just the right amount of animal print(they go with everything).

2. For a dressier look(and if you are looking for height), check out these super comfortable black espadrille wedges by Eileen Fisher. (I have the exact ones linked and they are on sale right now at Zappos-yay).

Bold Leopard Kimono

This oh-so-happy colorful blouse by Anthropologie is the second item I selected.  Since it is hot in Florida already, I will roll the sleeves to ¾ length and also wear it with my fav denim shorts.  However, if it is still cool where you live (and for when it cools off here), I totally see this top with jeans or casual black pants.   For shoes, I suggest black sandals or these fun orange thongs for a pop of color. (Excuse the toe marks. They are well-loved:))

Colorful blouse with denim shorts

My third and final item in the bag was this Odette Smocked Blouse by Maeve (it has a Liberty of London vibe).  I love how it was thoughtfully smocked at the waist yet still blouses at the top (perfect if you don’t have the flattest stomach but also don’t want to look like you have no waist at all).  As a bonus, the colors in this top will carry you into the fall.  It can also be worn with denim cut-offs or perhaps a cute casual skirt. I suggest pairing this outfit with these go-with-everything gladiator style sandals in a nude color. I am also picturing this outfit with green or brown Birkenstocks and a straw fedora hat at my next fall music festival. What do you think?

Floral blouse w/ denim shorts

Well, there you have it!  My happy mail from Anthropologie.  Three happy items to perk up my denim cut-offs. No, I have not been compensated to say this but Anthro (with its boho vibe) is pretty much my spirit store- it gets me.  I do not buy everything there, but I love to buy a few fabulous pieces each season to mix in with other classic basics.  I can always count on them to freshen my wardrobe!   I will continue to update my shop page with these items but in the meantime, let’s chat. Tell me, what is your go-to shop? I would love to hear from you. I am also here for fashion questions. Leave me a comment below:)

Cinco de Mayo & Taco Tuesday - Oh my!

Sounds like a good excuse for a fiesta to me.

It’s not every day that Taco Tuesday and Cinco de Mayo fall on the same day so why not break out of your quarantine slump and throw a little at-home fiesta! Now I know that the US has commercialized this holiday as an excuse to celebrate but I am okay with that. I LOVE Mexican culture any day so it doesn’t take much arm twisting to influence me. I embrace the colorful decor, the mariachi bands, the tacos and of course the margaritas- I mean, what’s not to celebrate? I’ve gathered a few inspirational photos and recipes for you, so keep reading.

Fiesta Party

For decor inspiration; the photo above shows a little fiesta I threw together back in the fall for a friend of mine’s birthday (it just happened to fall on Taco Tuesday). I bought the streamers, flag banner and sombrero headband from Amazon (here’s a complete party kit here) and the photo props and birthday balloon are from Party City. The table runner is a purchase from my travels.

Fiesta Cookies

These custom fiesta cookies are the cutest! These were made by a local baker back in Alabama. Unfortunately she doesn’t ship but here’s a link for some similar fiesta cookies I found on Etsy.

Truth: I rarely find a margarita that I do not like.

However, if you are looking for something a little different than the traditional marg, try this dark cherry paloma recipe below. It is one of my favorites!

Dark Cherry Paloma Recipe

  • 1 cup (divided) crushed ice

  • 1.5 ounces silver tequila

  • 3 Luxardo cherries smashed

  • Juice of 1/2 -1 whole lime

  • Fresca

  • Citrus liqueur

Fill an old fashioned size cocktail glass with 1/2 cup crushed ice. In a cocktail shaker, add 1/2 cup crushed ice, tequila, cherries and lime juice. Shake well and strain over the crushed ice in the cup. Fill remainder of glass with Fresca. Give it a stir and and add a splash of citrus liqueur to the top.

De nada. Salud!

Ignore the character marks on my well-loved pan, but I had to share this super easy Mexican style recipe that I threw together. I love that it is a complete meal and you only have to dirty one dish!

Sheet Pan Nachos

  • First, spread a bag of your favorite tortilla chips on the pan.

  • Then layer the following: 1 can of black beans(drained and rinsed), 1/2 bag of frozen roasted corn (I get mine at Trader Joe’s), and a can of sliced pickled jalapenos.

  • Next, sprinkle 1/2 pack of taco seasoning all over.

  • Top with your favorite Mexican variety shredded cheese.

  • Bake at 400 degrees for approximately 8-10 minutes.

  • Layer on the toppings: shredded lettuce, diced tomato, salsa, diced red onion and sour cream.

You will want to get this fiesta of flavors in your mouth right away!

I hope this has inspired you. Now, go do your part my friends. Let’s support Cinco de Mayo and celebrate in true fiesta style!
