The holiday season is a time for celebration, connection, and, of course, creating memories around the table. Whether you’re hosting a festive dinner, a cozy brunch, or a casual get-together, the way you style your holiday table can transform the atmosphere of your gathering. In this post, we’ll walk you through our favorite holiday tablescaping ideas and how you can create a memorable dining experience for your guests. Plus, we’ll showcase some of our recent tablescapes to inspire your own designs. Let’s dive in!
1. Start with a Tablecloth or Runner
The foundation of any tablescape begins with a base. A luxurious tablecloth or runner sets the tone and anchors the rest of your decor. Whether you’re opting for a rich velvet fabric for a classic holiday look or a textured linen for a more understated vibe, your tablecloth should reflect the aesthetic you’re aiming for. For an elegant touch, choose a rich velvet or silk fabric in a solid or a cotton/linen designer pattern. For a coastal look, you might choose a textured linen or block-print cotton and for a modern feel, you might choose a bold geometric or metallic fabric. There are many beautiful tablecloths and runners available but if you can’t find what you are looking for, you can always buy a favorite fabric and have your local seamstress hem it to your table size.
Our Tip: Look for patterns or textures that will complement your placemats and plates. If your china pattern or placemats have intricate details, you may want a simple tablecloth. If your dishes are solid with not much interest, then we suggest a patterned tablecloth to add character and interest.
Below is one of our recent holiday tablescapes where we used a neutral colored, geometric woven fabric as the perfect backdrop for this opulent theme.

2. Layering Your Tableware
Tablescaping is all about layers—starting with your tableware. Begin with chargers or placemats, followed by dinner plates, salad plates, and finally, the soup or dessert bowls. Don’t forget about glassware and flatware, which should be arranged thoughtfully to create balance and symmetry.
Our Tip: For a more formal setting, mix and layer fine china with vintage pieces, or stick to one set of elegant plates with intricate details for a timeless holiday look. Casual gatherings only need a placemat and dinner plate.
In the previous tablescape, we mixed vintage teal ruffled edge salad plates with a solid white dinner plate and paired those with tortoise and brass flatware for a mix of opulence and bohemian. In the colorful fall tablescape below, the colors are similar but the setting is elevated to a more refined look by using fine china and silver flatware. Both looks lend festive charm; one more casual and one more elegant.

3. Create Centerpiece Magic
A beautiful centerpiece can serve as the focal point of your table and can be the conversation starter for your guests. Whether you choose a lavish floral arrangement with candlesticks, a casual grouping of plants, or an exotic sculptural conversation piece, the centerpiece should reflect the style and mood of the season. Do not be afraid to think outside the box. We are always dreaming up ideas for our next gathering and have compiled some ideas for you below. For a John Derian x Anthropologie look, try incorporating moss, mushrooms, pumpkins and birds. For a chinoiserie chic look, mix blue and white vases with fresh greenery and oranges. For a casual, coastal look, you can’t go wrong with orchids and rattan lanterns. For a Traditonal Home or Veranda classic look, try pairing magnolia, peonies and velvet pumpkins with classic china. For a colorfully modern twist on a Christmas tablescape, pair these colorful Nutcrackers with these leopard chargers and urn.
Our Tip: Keep the centerpiece low enough to allow for easy conversation across the table unless you have a high ceiling or large room, then go over the top tall. Shop your home for unique pieces to use as a centerpiece.

4. Add Texture with Napkins and Napkin Rings
No tablescape is complete without the right napkins! Choose natural fiber, linen or cotton, napkins in colors or patterns that complement the rest of the table. You can elevate the look by folding them in a creative way or adding themed napkin rings.
Our Tip: There are many ways to get creative with folding your napkins. Do not get stuck with thinking you can only place your napkin to the left of the plate. We do suggest natural fibers such as cotton or linen. Elevate your napkins even more by adding your monogram or other embroidery to the corner.

5. Lighting Is Key
Holiday lighting is essential to creating the right ambiance. You can add warmth and intimacy with candlelight—whether through taper candles in elegant holders, tea lights scattered across the table, cordless led table lights or a grand chandelier overhead. Be sure to use candles that complement the other colors in your design.
Our Tip: A mix of pillar candles, tea lights, and tapered candles creates visual interest while casting a soft glow.

Our Tip: Get creative with place cards by incorporating them into your centerpiece or using natural elements like sprigs of rosemary or dried flowers.

Whether you prefer a classic red-and-green scheme or a more neutral, sophisticated color palette, the right colors can make all the difference in setting the tone for your holiday gathering. Here are a few ideas:
Traditional Red & Green: Perfect for a festive, classic holiday look. Plaid and Nutcrackers pair well with these colors. For a twist on this traditional pairing, try altering the hue of the red (think burgundy or pink) or green(think emerald or chartreuse) for an added twist.
French Blue & Olive Green: Beautiful colors on their own accord but the combination is a stunner. We would accent with citrus and greenery.
Gold & Navy: When paired with natural fall colors, adds a touch of luxury and glamour.
Bright Colors & White / Gold : A fun, modern look.
Blush & Blue: For a coastal fall twist that any grandmillenial will love!
Jewel Tones: Plum, teal & topaz add opulence to natural elements creating a cozy, intimate feel.
Our Tip: Stick to a maximum of three main colors for cohesion and add metallics as accents to make the table sparkle.

What is e-design?
Are you a candidate for virtual interior design? E-design streamlines the design process which equals time and cost savings for the client.
If there is one good thing to come from this pandemic(and there are actually several), it has to be that it finally forced me to start offering E-Design services. I have decorated homes in-person for years but never really had the time to acquire the tech skills needed to convert my designs digitally until this past year. Now that I have, it has opened a whole new world! I am now able to not only help local clients but also help clients from all over the country by designing in this way. For example, an old friend and college room-mate whom I have not seen in years recently reached out to me on social media about designing her living room. In the past, that would have involved a trip to her home to measure, a hand rendering sketch of the room, followed by many days of shopping in-person. The whole process generally took months. Now, I am able to do this process in as little as two weeks!
You may be wondering if E-Design, the interior design of a space done entirely online, is for you. I will say it is not for everybody, but if you are able to take a picture, email, take basic measurements and are somewhat of a do-it-yourselfer you are the perfect candidate for it. It really is for the do-it-yourselfer that just needs ideas and guidance. For example, my friend had recently inherited her grandmother’s sofa and that initiated her wanting to re-do her living / family room. She had already begun by taking everything out of the room and painting. She just did not know what to do next. She needed help with what furniture to keep and what to replace. She also was not sure of where she should place the furniture in the room. After a quick e-mail chat to discuss measurements and photos, I was able to draft an aerial furniture layout and a design board for her room. From there, she could purchase the items I suggested and finish the room herself at her own pace.

Colorful Christmas decor - a holiday home tour

Honoring the client’s traditions, we try to elevate their holiday decor by adding our magical touch. Every year, we look forward to making homes come alive with the season so you can happily host your family and friends for magical celebrations to make those holiday memories. As we welcome this holiday season and gear up for decking the halls, I thought you might enjoy a peek into my home and some of my client’s homes from holidays over the years. A minimal, colorful Christmas tablescape- Pulling colors from the silk drapery stripes and Otomi style painting, I styled this colorful holiday table-scape. It incorporates fresh greenery, bottlebrush trees and these fun striped Anna Spiro candles. Hanging colored glass ball ornaments from the light fixture over the table was the finishing touch.
Colorful Nutcracker Mantle - Here’s a good Trad with a Twist moment. We created these colorfully painted Nutcrackers for this traditional mantle and they were a huge hit on our Instagram page. They were the perfect touch of holiday without taking away from the fabulous Tim Jaeger art. The whimsical artisan stockings and pink poinsettias finished the look.
Each year, my daughter and I enjoy adding a new “Glitter Cottage” from Cody Foster. We have quite the colorful collection and each one has its own unique character. You can make your own “Putz Houses” by buying the craft cardboard houses, then adding paint, glitter. ornaments, snow, etc. Here is a wonderful DIY class led by artist, Liz Snyder. We always plan to make one and the time gets away from us! If you don’t have time or are not a crafter, you can shop pre-made putz houses below and start a fun little collection.
Traditional Red Christmas Decor - You can never go wrong with red when it comes to traditional Christmas decor. This tree was traditional but with a twist. The client wanted a “Scottie” dog theme. She already had quite the collection of Scottie ornaments but we added this red tartan plaid ribbon and touches of gold to jazz it up! A tartan tree skirt was added after photos were taken. The gallery below is a collection of Christmas decor we have created with reds.
Trad with a Twist - We added some holiday magic to this traditional, southern home by adding new ribbon, garlands and greenery. Using the chinoiserie vases I had sourced for her previously, I added a mix of faux and fresh greenery with red berries for a lush look on the mantle. The added pom-pom garland gives just a fun touch of whimsy.

Botanicum - Katie Scott & Kathy Willis
Buy this for a stunning coffee table book. It would make a very nice gift as well. The cover and every page are absolutely gorgeous. The botanical drawings are museum and art quality. I never tire of flipping through the pages. The price is really a steal for what you get. Some of the pages could even be framed. (I have a preview video in my Insta stories)
Tortoise Shell I-Phone Case
I have always loved tortoise shell so this was a no-brainer for me. It has held up great so far and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. I also ordered the pop-socket to match.

Simple Modern Insulated Wine Tumbler
I bought the wood grain design and really like it. In fact, I may buy some as Christmas gifts. These are similar to Swig but for half the price. I’m sure there are some quality differences but for $14.99, I was willing to give it a try. So far, it keeps my beverage cold and works great. It does suggest hand washing.
Tefeca Stretch Watch Band
I bought this because I wanted a fabric band and you can’t go wrong with a cheetah pattern. Also, it was half the price of thee Apple brand versions. So far, it has worked well for me. There are different wrist sizes and other patterns available, so pay attention to that when ordering.
Living with Pattern - Rebecca Atwood
I’ll be honest. I was looking for coffee table books and the black and white dotted cover caught my attention. The book is a nice quality with coral page edges so pretty from any angle. I too love mixing colors and pattern into homes, so of course I enjoyed the inside as well.
That’s What She Said- Wise Words from Influential Women - Kimothy Joy
Buy this if you need an empowering gift for a friend. The quotes are powerful and the sketches pretty. I also enjoy sharing it with my daughter. It is not a large book.
Deep Steep Bubble Bath - Rosemary Mint
I love all Deep Steep products. My sister-in-law introduced them to me years ago and I still keep buying them. We both are allergy sensitive and can’t use chemical perfumes so when we found this natural product with essential oils, we were in love. Rosemary - Mint is my favorite! I also use their Grapefruit- Bergamot Sugar Scrub and have loved many different kinds of the hand soap (It is not harsh on the skin and smells lovely).
Revlon One-Step Hot Air Brush
I wish I had this many years ago! So much easier than holding a round brush with one hand and the dryer in the other. Bonus use: Refreshing dirty hair! Just put in some dry shampoo and dry with this; your hair will look like you just fixed it! (Note: It gets very hot so keep it moving. Don’t just leave in one place too long or you could have heat damage.)

Golden Goose Sneakers - Revolve
Yes, they are expensive but they are worth the splurge. Italian leather, hand finished in designer styles and super comfortable. They have a hidden slight lift in the heel which is great for the back and because the interior is leather, socks are not required:). I have the Super-Star style (my birthday present this year) but I am also loving the high-tops. I am wearing on the daily because they go with everything and super easy to slip and go. Still mastering the perfect shoe-string tie though.

A nine year old finally got her “friend party” and it was a blockbuster event! We rented a private room at a local Ciné Bistro movie theater. Today’s curated list covers Valentines and Galentines gift ideas! I don’t know about you but my husband and I rarely do anything special for Valentines(He claims it’s a made up Hallmark holiday-insert eye roll. Don’t worry; I still love him.) but I would love a “Galentine’s Day” celebration with my favorite Mom friends.
According to Southern Living, “Valentine’s Day is out, and Galentine’s Day is in.” What is a Galentine’s Day y0u might ask? It’s a special holiday designed to celebrate the women in your life who support and love you. I can’t remember where I first heard the concept but after searching online, I guess we have Leslie Knope from NBC’s Parks and Recreation to thank. “Every February 13, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.” - Leslie Knope. With that in mind, I curated a list of “happies” that any gal-pal or Mom friend would love to be gifted;)

Today’s tips are all about wellness. For the last year women have carried a heavier load than usual with work from home transitions, remote learning for our children, trying to keep our families healthy and accomplishing birthdays and holiday celebrations in whole new ways. You’ve done well. Now, it’s time to take care of you!
I’m sharing my favorite wellness items to help you refresh. After all, we can’t pour from an empty cup.

LULULEMON WUNDER UNDER HIGH-RISE LEGGINGS - Hands down the best leggings you will ever own. They make everybody look good! I have my first pair from many years ago and they still look good today. Tip: Hang to dry and they will last you forever.
CHERRY BOMB ROLLER - Like a hot stone massage tool that can be used at home. I ordered this because I have chronic back and hip tension. Pop this in the microwave for 1 minute, then let it melt away your deepest tension.
BAREFOOT DREAMS THROW- Wrap up in this cozy cocoon of a blanket when you just need to relax. So excited that it’s now available in animal print!
THE BUCKET LIST- A new travel book to give us hope and dreams of our next adventure.
SEAWEED BATH CO. BODY SCRUB- Scrub off that dull, dry winter skin with this and get glowing again. All natural ingredients. Tip: You can’t go wrong with any product this company makes.

MASSAGE GUN- Put your husband or kids to work with this one. Chiro-grade deep tissue massage at home. Love mine so far! Tip: Bonus that the kids actually love using it on you;)
ON CLOUD STRATUS(Zappos) - Because we all need to move our bodies and these make it easier. I traded in my Hokas for these and I’m loving them. They have way more structure and support than the original On-Cloud leisure sneakers.
EUCALYPTUS SHOWER SPRAY- I bought this in a high-end spa years ago and now we keep it in our shower daily. It opens up your sinuses and your whole bathroom will smell like a spa.
GUMMY VITAMINS- Because we all need to stay healthy. These are my everyday vitamins. “My Kind” is great quality and I love that they are available in a gummy version now.
ON CLOUD 70/30 (Zappos)- For when you need an everyday walking & errand sneaker that is fashionable too. I wear these at least 3-4x/week because they just slip-on and go. Lightweight and comfy too! This is my 3rd pair of this version.
BELT BAG(aka fanny pack)- Give your shoulders a break. You carry enough already. This one matches the sneakers in #13:)
SKIN BETTER ALPHA-RET OVERNIGHT CREAM- Who doesn’t want help with wrinkles? If you need a retinol that does not make your face peel, this is it. I discovered this last year and it is my favorite night cream ever.
AVEDA HAND RELIEF- Soothe those dry hands. Tip: Keep it on your bedside table and slather up before bed for the softest hands. You will also want the travel size for your purse;)
DEEP STEEP BUBBLE BATH- You know my love for all Deep Steep products and this one is a favorite at our house for bath time. The kids kept using it so I got them their own bottle. It is moisturizing and the smell from the essential oils is heavenly.
50 ADVENTURES IN THE 50 STATES- I think we all dream of travel again but if we can’t leave the country, we might as well plan some adventures right here at home. I can’t wait to read this one!
DRY BRUSH- Great for lymphatic drainage, exfoliation and can be energizing. For under $10, give it a try! Tip: You are supposed to start at the extremities and brush toward the heart.
CHAI TEA- Any tea that soothes you and feels like a treat is a good idea but this chai is my current obsession.

Decorating with baskets
Baskets may be the unsung hero of decorating. Not only do they serve so many purposes but they also add texture and an earthy aesthetic to a room. From rattan to seagrass to water hyacinth to wood, there are so many materials available that all add their own unique warmth to a room. Baskets can be incorporated into almost any decorating style and they can be used in so many ways. Below I’ve shown some ways that I have used them in my own home.
One of the most inexpensive ways to incorporate baskets into your home is to use them as decorative containers for house plants. I keep a variety of sizes on hand like the ones below and just hide my plant container inside. I remove the plant before watering but you can add clear liners to the bottom if you want to water them in the basket. These particular ones are handwoven from natural seagrass which is one of my favorite materials. It lends a casual coastal vibe that works with most every style.
Baskets can be hung on the wall for art. Here I’ve shown the use of a large tobacco basket hung above a sofa as the large art piece in the room. The look works well here in this eclectic casual family room but also looks great with the whole urban farmhouse trend. The one in the photo is no longer available but I found a similar color and size from Ballard Designs shown below. It is 37”square and to hang above a sofa, you need one that large. You could also do a grouping of 3 different sizes like this set (18.5”, 20” and a 23”square) from Amazon for a more affordable option. Both of these are in a warm brown color family. If you prefer more of the gray wash color, I also found this great option from Amazon for less than $50.
In this family room, you can see another use of the tobacco basket(see, it looks great in both styles) but I also want to point out the coffee table basket. Properly proportioned coffee table baskets are perfect for displaying a collection of related objects and/or for hiding clutter. I use this large one in our family room to organize books and magazines AND to hide the ugly remote controls;) People ask me ALL THE TIME about where they can find one of these baskets. I actually got lucky and found this at a TJ Maxx years ago and I have not been able to find another one just like it in this size until just recently. After much searching, I found the medium Crawford Basket from Ballard Designs to be the closest size to mine. (It is 26” long whereas mine is 30”). It is made of handwoven rattan(actually sturdier) instead of seagrass but should substitute perfectly. It is linked below. If you have a smaller coffee table, this Water Hyacinth serving tray(19.5” x 14”) from Pottery Barn would work beautifully as well. A round tray is another good option if you are doing a grouping of things. Something about grouping things in a tray gives order and tidies up a space.
Like I mentioned earlier, baskets are great for hiding ugly plastic plant containers. Here I used a large round basket to display a fiddle-leaf fern. This combination is quite popular right now and can be done very affordably. I bought this smaller fiddle-leaf from Lowe’s for around $20 and the basket was around $20 too. You will need to add a plastic liner to the inside bottom of the basket for watering. You can find those at any garden store or on Amazon. Below are a few similar baskets that work wonderfully for this.
With the huge Home Edit craze I think everybody is suddenly organizing all of their closets. I started a little organizing myself but it is still a work in progress. Those clear acrylic containers can really add up and don’t hold as much as I need for all of my clutter. I found that these baskets from Michael’s do the trick for me. They add texture, hide clutter and are under $8 each.
Don’t forget about colored baskets! They are great for displaying in groupings as wall art. I found the one below while traveling. I bought several with plans to hang them as art. For now, I am using this one for a pop of color in the living room and to display our current shell collection.
Something in my Amazon cart now are these tissue baskets. I was thrilled to find these and at such an affordable price! I don’t know about you, but in addition to hating remotes scattered about a room, I hate seeing ugly tissue boxes. I think I’ll order one for every bathroom and the family room to fix that problem. There were some great options in square and rectangular sizes. I’ve linked them below.
As you can see, there are so many decorating options with baskets. Even basket wraps for your Christmas Tree stand! I am currently loving the basket lighting pendants I’m seeing in so many designer kitchens and you can never go wrong with a Moses basket in a nursery. A few more uses that I didn’t mention above are baskets for toy, toiletry storage and laundry storage. At our last house, we had cubbies in the laundry room and I bought four matching baskets from West Elm to display. They served as functional laundry baskets but they were pretty enough to put on display. I found so many unique options available while writing this post. I’ve linked several below for inspiration.

family-friendly halloween party - BOO to YOU Bash
With missed birthday parties, anniversaries and more, we were looking for a safe way to celebrate something this year. With cooler weather and Halloween approaching, an outdoor Costume Parade seemed just the thing to do. Families were invited to drop by anytime between 6-9 to allow for social distancing in small groups. Some just drove by in costume to say hello while others stopped for a quick visit under the festive jack-o-lanterns. Either way, the BOO Bash turned out to be a sweet treat for everyone!
There were individually packaged refreshments provided like PB & J, chips, oranges, individual slices of pizza and mini charcuterie boxes. The snow cones seemed to be the real hit of the night though! There was a photo booth where families could snap a quick pic in their costumes. The kids could play an assortment of games like bean bag toss, ring the witch hat or paint their very own mini pumpkin to take home.
Each child left with one of the favors below and all had a smile on their face:) To make your own witch broom favor bags like the ones below, follow directions here. (They were a Pinterest craft that turned out really cute.)

Witches and Jack-O-Lanterns
Halloween Decor
If you know me, you know by now that I LOVE FALL! It’s something about the crisp air, the falling leaves and pumpkins that makes me get a little pep in my step. It’s no coincidence that our wedding anniversary and our son’s birthday are both in October:). You also know by now that I love to decorate for holidays so it’s only logical that I would explode with Halloween decor as soon as the first day of fall came in September. Sometimes I wait until October but this year I just could not wait any longer! 2020 has me looking for any reason to lift the spirits and celebrate right now. How about you?
All of our holiday decorations are a collection I’ve gathered here and there over time. Each year I like to move things around and add a little something new to the mix. If you are just starting your collection, start with Joann’s or Michael’s. I was just in there last week and they both had a great selection plus they almost always have a sale. Then over time you can add unique and sentimental pieces to this base collection. If you need a little inspiration to get started on your Halloween decorating, keep reading below.
The foyer is a good place to start since it is the first thing your guests see when they enter your home. I like to change out the items on this antique table in our entry to reflect the season or holiday.

The next area that I usually decorate is the mantle. This family room is where we spend most of our time so I usually put the things that the kids love the most in there. This black cat is my daughter’s favorite and the witch nutcracker is my son’s favorite so they always make their annual appearance. This year I added extra pumpkins and witch brooms to the mix. I am loving this teal one and am planning to grab one more of those. The white and orange ones I may leave as-is or the kids and I might get crafty and paint those. A plus is that they are not carved so we can re-use them for Thanksgiving decor!

Halloween Decorating Part 2 - 10/2/2020
My favorite month is finally here!!! Happy October my friends! I finally got around to decorating the dining room and the front porch this week! I used the outdoor trees(a TJ Maxx find) from last year on the buffet this year. The kiddos made spider crafts this year that I used for ornaments:). The jack-0-lantern and witch hat made their appearance as well. His wicked grin always sets the mood! The garland (it took 2) is new from Michael’s this year.
I started the outside decorations with the front porch. We will add a few more things closer to Halloween but at least the entry is inviting. I’m most excited about this garland I made for the ceiling this year. I tied strips of black tulle and paper jack-o-lanterns to a string of Halloween lights and zig-zagged them across the porch ceiling. It is so fun to walk under! (I also considered hanging these black witch hats that would make an equally cute garland; next time!). The wooden skeletons are from Michael’s and I just added a little ribbon for a detail. I also found the witch brooms that I stuck in my planter from Michael’s. The pumpkins are a collection from various stores. The two giant ones are from Target.
